Let’s make it clear. Today, you can start your business with little or no money, with the internet. You don’t need your own product, and sometimes you don’t need to have your own .com domain to start selling online. There are lots of companies already provide the products, affiliate program and even free blog hosting, so you can start selling in less than one hour. However, without traffic, your business would be dead, no matter how good the product is.
Below, I highlighted the most popular and effective business promotion online.
Pay-per-click advertising
If you ever used Google search, you’ll notice the right hand section, which is labeled as sponsored links. Those are called Google Ads. The website owner pays to Google each time people click on his link. Unlike Google organic, free listings, making your ads appear using Google ads is not too hard. Your links can appear on that section too in less than five minutes. Log on to http://adwords.google.com for more information.
I strongly recommend pay-per-click advertising for lots of reasons:
- It’s fast. You can setup and have your ads run in a few minutes.
- Targeted traffic. Unlike offline promotion, forum marketing or social media marketing, traffic that comes from Google search are highly relevant and targeted. Anyone who click and arrive at your website probably already interested to buy your products.
- No hassle to learn and work for SEO. Of course your website can be ranked top ten in Google for free. However, getting that ranking could be hard, especially for competitive, profitable keywords. Plus, there’s no guarantee that your link will stay top ten. Should Google changes their algorithm, your website will drop to second page or maybe to the 30th page.
- Cost effective. You don’t need to pay when your ads is displayed. You pay only when someone click on your ads. Hence, you can always set the budget, and maximum cost per click base on the conversion rate, and product price.
- Lots of targeted traffic. Not only your links will appear on Google search, but also on their search partners like Ask, Youtube and MySpace.
Article marketing
On low budget? Or starting from scratch? Article marketing should be your choice. You don’t need a product since you can always find a good, quality products to sell like your own, at Clickbank or Amazon marketplace. You also don’t need a full website or blog, since the traffic comes from article directories. Websites like Squidoo, Hubpages, Ezine Articles and ehow allows anyone to register for free and post their ideas. You can also include links back to your website in your articles, giving more exposure to your products and website. Keep in mind that you are posting articles to third party’s website, so you must follow their rules. Especially when you are using Ezine Articles or Squidoo. Due to lots of marketers are abusing their system, these websites have strict rules for authors.

Search Engine Optimization
For long term, you might want to consider this one. To get good ranking for Google organic listings, you need to provide good, quality content. Google loves quality content and will always give good ranking to any website or blog with great, outstanding content. Next, you also need to build lots of backlinks to your website. This can be done with article marketing, social bookmarking, affiliate programs or forum signature.
The process could be long and require lots of works. So, if you have some budget, you might want to hire someone else to do this work for you. Or you might as well switch to pay-per-click advertising. These are some tips for search engine optimization:
- Use blog instead of website. By using blog, you can easily post, manage content, interact with your customers and get ranked with less work. Google loves blog since the script is search engine friendly, the content is always updates, each time you post your blog will be submitted to directories like Technorati. Plus, the comment feature allows discussion among blog readers, which will add more content.
- Build backlinks from article directories, social bookmarking sites, blog directories and forum posting.
- Always use the targeted keyword in your page title or blog post. When Google bots indexed your website, the first thing they read is the title.
- Make the description relevant. Description is also important.
- Keep the content relevant to the keywords.
Affiliate program
If you are selling your own product, traffic from affiliates is a must. In fact, for some markets, 90% of your sales are made by affiliates, compared to the rest of traffic source. An affiliate is a marketing partner which promote and send real customers to your website. Unlike the rest, an affiliate is real people. What makes affiliate program so special is you pay to affiliates only when they made the sale. In short, if you don’t earn any profit, you pay nothing for it. If you make lots of profit, you will share the commission with your affiliates. It’s totally risk-free.
You don’t need to be tech savvy to setup and run your own affiliate programs. There are lots of companies will manage affiliate tracking sometimes even payment processing for you. If you are selling eBook, consider using Clickbank or Paydotcom since most affiliates there are good at selling information products. Plus, Clickbank will handle the payment for you as well. While for software products like DVD burning tools, you can use Regnow or OneNetworkDirect. As for the rest, like hard good, Commission Junction or Linkshare would probably the best choice.
If you are a merchant, you’ll find out that affiliate program is the best promotion method, even better than SEO or pay-per-click. These are the benefits:
- Pay to affiliates only when they made sales. In short, the better affiliate performance, the more money you’ll make.
- No hassle to to manage factors related to search engines like content creation, link building, bid management.
- Your affiliates will link to your website. Which means you’ll get more backlinks and better Google ranking.
- Some affiliates have over 100,000 mailing list subscribers. Which means the potential is huge.
Selling on eBay
Again, this is another privilege by product owner, especially hard good seller. eBay doesn’t allow downloadable products. So, if you are selling e-good, like eBook, you can list your items at eBay by burning them to CD or DVD and sell as hard good.
You need to have a Paypal account since it is trusted and used by 75% eBay buyers. The key to successful auction business is to build credibility and trust. You need to start by buying other’s products first. Then, your rating will increase. The more rating you get, the more you are trusted.
Another special thing about eBay, is that growing your eBay business will also help other businesses that you own. Customers which buy from you at eBay marketplace, will probably know your business, your website and your brand. They will buy again from you outside eBay.
Email marketing
Email marketing is recycled traffic. Which means you won’t be able to get and collect emails if you don’t implement any of above traffic strategy. The good thing about collecting emails, is the customers would probably buy from you for lifetime. Plus, by sending them emails, you will be able to constantly remind them about your business, which leads to high buying rate, on average at 10%, compared to 2% if you don’t collect emails.
Forum marketing
Forum marketing is not a good promotion methods for some markets. Before register and post, please read the forum rules. I strongly recommend that you check whether that forum has marketing and advertising section or not. For example like WSO at Warrior Forum and Buy, Sell and Trade section at Digital Point forum. If that forum doesn’t have any of these, then it is not worth of your time. Plus, some forum allows signature, while some don’t. While you are prohibited to promote directly in the message board (i.e. forum spamming).
Offline promotion
This could be a good promotion method if you utilize it properly. To use this type of promotion, you need your own domain name, which is easy to remember. Then, create a proper, effective advertisement based on your product. Make sure you are using the right channel for advertising. For example, if you are selling something related to cell phone, then your ads must appear on magazines related to phone and technology. The same goes when you are going to use television. Display your ads only at times when most of your target audience watch TV.
Anyway, offline promotion is an advanced method. Unless if you are a big brand, I don’t recommend offline promotion. It is less efficient, with poor result compared to online promotion. Download this guide and learn step-by-step methods about online marketing.
